# What's kept, and where it goes

> Captions aren't saved unless you say so, and audio isn't recorded.

> [card] Captions aren't saved
>
> Unless you turn on saving, nothing is kept once you start a new conversation. Saved
> conversations stay on your device, not in your account.

> [card] Audio isn't recorded
>
> Except a meeting you record for a transcript, which Readout doesn't keep once it's sent.

> [card] Voices aren't kept
>
> Telling returning speakers apart uses their voice only for that conversation, and never saves it.

> [card] Sounds stay home
>
> What Readout's screen listens to for the doorbell and alarms never leaves the Pi.

## Who hears what

* **The speech service.** With cloud captions, the audio goes to the speech service to be
transcribed as it's said. If the internet drops, captions are made on the device and nothing is
  sent.
* **Anthropic's Claude**, only for what you turn on: [Correct with Claude](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/languages.md#correct-with-claude)
gets the text of the lines it checks, a [recap](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/keeping-what-was-said.md#recap) the text
being summed up, and the TV schedule's description box what you type in it.
* **Meeting transcripts** go to the service that writes them. The app says which, and whether it
keeps a copy, before you send one.
* **Lights and TVs** are switched on your home network by the home agent, with no cloud between.

## Reporting a problem

When you report a problem from **Menu → Help**, the app sends what it knows of how things were
going, such as the device and whether it was captioning, but never what was said.
