# How captions look

> Theme, text size, colors and full screen, in the app and on the TV.

**Menu → Display** sets how captions look, with a preview at the top. The TV follows the same
settings, with its own text size.

## Theme

**Theme** chooses dark, light, or **Automatic**, which follows the device's light or dark mode. Dark
is the default. Background, text, accent and caption background colors can each be set too.

## Caption text

Font, size, weight (regular or bold), line spacing, letter spacing, alignment (left or centered),
text color and a text edge, for reading over a busy background.

The TV's text size has buttons of its own, **Bigger text on TVs** and **Smaller text on TVs**.

## Captions

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Color-code speakers** | Each speaker's words in a color of their own. |
| **Dim earlier captions** | The latest two lines stay at full strength, so new words stand out. |
| **Show words as they're recognized** | Words appear as they're heard, and may change as more is heard. |
| **Underline words that may be misheard** | A wavy line where speech was unclear. Cloud captions only. |
| **Animate new words** | A quick fade, rise or blur as each word appears. With reduced motion turned on, words only fade. |

## Full screen

In a browser on a computer or tablet, the **Full screen** button at the top, beside Display, puts
Readout over the whole screen, with none of the browser's tabs or address bar. Press it again, or
Esc, to bring them back. On a phone it's in the Menu, under Captions.

iPhones can't show a web page full screen, so it isn't offered there. The Readout app already fills
the screen.
