# Languages and translation

> Caption more than one language, translate as people talk, and get names right.

All of these are in **Menu → Languages**.

## The languages spoken

Set the **Language spoken**, and a **Second language** if some people speak another. Captions follow
people as they switch, even mid-sentence.

**Other languages** says how to write what's said in any other language. With English as the
language spoken:

| Choice | What you see |
| - | - |
| **Switch to them** | Their words in the language they're spoken in. |
| **Transliterate into English letters** | Their words spelled as they sound, in English letters. |
| **Translate into English** | The English translation, in place of what was said. Saved conversations keep what was said too. |

## Translation

Under **Translate captions into**, choose a language, and every caption in another language gets a
translation underneath, in the app, on TVs and in what you download.

With a second language set, **Both ways** translates each into the other: English lines get Spanish
underneath, say, and Spanish lines get English. It suits two people who each read their own
language.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If the main speech service is down or busy, a backup takes over for a few minutes. It follows
> both languages, but can't translate: the status at the top says "not translating" until the main
> one is back.

## Names and words

**Names and words to recognize** takes one per line: people, places, medicines, terms. Captions use
them to spell names right, and to correct near misses. **About this conversation** takes a few words
on the topic, which helps as well.

## Correct with Claude

**Correct with Claude** has Anthropic's Claude check each line a second or two after it's said, and
fix names, terms and quotes the speech service misheard, including words from another language. The
line changes in place, on TVs too. It uses your names and words list, and changes a word only where
what was said sounds like it.

> [!NOTE]
>
> With it on, the text of those lines goes to Anthropic. In a conversation in English alone, only
> lines with another language's words, or words the speech service wasn't sure of, are sent.

## Without the internet

Captions made on the device itself, when the internet drops, are in English only. See
[When the internet drops](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/when-the-internet-drops.md).
