# Troubleshooting

> What to try when captions, a TV or the home agent don't do what you expect.

> [accordion] Captions don't start
>
> The browser has to be allowed to use the microphone. Look for a microphone or lock icon by the
> address and allow it for readout.tv, then press **Start captions** again. On a phone, check the
> browser is allowed the microphone in the phone's own settings too.

> [accordion] Captions miss names or words
>
> Add them to **Menu → Languages → Names and words to recognize**, one per line, and say a few
> words on the topic under **About this conversation**. Put the microphone closer to whoever is
> talking, or add a [phone as a microphone](https://docs.readout.tv/get-started/phones-as-microphones.md) by them.

> [accordion] One person shows as two speakers
>
> Tap the newer label and choose **Same person as…**, then the earlier speaker.

> [accordion] The TV shows a code again
>
> It was forgotten in **TVs and phones**, or its browser's data was cleared. Type the new code in
> the app to pair it again.

> [accordion] The TV doesn't show the captions
>
> Check that its page is open (**readout.tv/tv**) and that it's showing your captions: if someone
> else has it, tap **Show here** beside it in **TVs and phones**.

> [accordion] The home agent doesn't find a TV
>
> The TV and the agent's computer must be on the same Wi-Fi, and the TV turned on. Tap **Look for
> TVs** to look now. On a Mac, check the agent was allowed on the local network (System Settings →
> Privacy & Security → Local Network).

> [accordion] Readout's screen doesn't switch the TV
>
> Turn on HDMI-CEC in the TV's settings (LG: SimpLink; Samsung: Anynet+; Sony: Bravia Sync), and
> plug a Pi 4 into the HDMI port nearest its power socket.

> [accordion] The status says it's using captions on the device
>
> The internet dropped, or the speech service couldn't be reached. Captions carry on in English on
> the device, and switch back by themselves. See [When the internet drops](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/when-the-internet-drops.md).
