# Caption the room

> With a microphone on the Pi, the TV captions whoever is in the room, with no phone needed.

With a microphone on [Readout's screen](https://docs.readout.tv/home/raspberry-pi.md) (a webcam's, or a speakerphone), the TV
can caption the room by itself. Whoever is there talks, and what they say shows on the TV, big. Nobody
needs a phone or the app open: it's for a visitor at the TV, say.

## Start and stop

| Start | Stop |
| - | - |
| **OK** on the TV's remote, while the home board shows | **OK** again |
| **Caption the room** in the app's [remote](https://docs.readout.tv/home/remote.md) | **Stop captions** in the app's remote |
| The big button of a presentation clicker plugged into the Pi | The same button pauses them, and starts them again |
| A speakerphone's mute button | The same button pauses them |

The home board says along the bottom which of these works on that screen. Captions also stop by
themselves after 10 minutes with nothing said.

## How they look

Captions of the room follow the app's settings: the [languages](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/languages.md), names and
words, and [how captions look](https://docs.readout.tv/captions/display.md), from the phone, tablet or computer that last
opened the app. Swear words are hidden unless you've turned that off.

[Activity](https://docs.readout.tv/account/activity-and-notifications.md) notes how long they ran, and who started and
stopped them.
